Cobalt Dealers Raise $15,000 for Cancer During Dealer Conference
The Cobalt 5 K Fun Run is an annual Cobalt dealer meeting function started in 2006 by Cobalt associate George Muffick, the North Eastern Regional Sales Manager at Cobalt Boats. Since it’s inception, George has been the leader of the event helping it grow from 6 participants in 2006 to the 78 that participated this year (either Running, Walking, or Biking). You see, George is a cancer survivor, and this year he made a focused effort to involve the worldwide Cobalt dealers in a fund raiser. Cobalt dealers were tested by a rejuvenating 5 K Fun Run in the Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg, FL running along the shores of Tampa Bay in the wee hours of the morning before the days agenda kicked off.
The Fun Run, which benefited the American Cancer Society, has been a dealer meeting event since 2006, but this was the first year to deem it a charitable cause, and the dealers responded to the fundraiser with very generous donations. Cobalt dealers accumulated over $15,000. 00 in a Calcutta auction which offered the sale of 17 - 4 person teams. The teams walked or ran the course for time, and the lowest cumulative time of the four man teams won the event. Dealers were allowed to purchase teams the night before the run at an exciting Calcutta, with an agreement to split 50%/50% the winnings with the cancer society.
After the event was over, and with an even more generous gesture, the winners donated their proceeds 100% to the Cancer Society. “The generosity of the Cobalt dealer group is simply amazing, and the fun run was absolutely a blast for all participants” says George Muffick. “The Fun Run has grown to become a fun and a competitive event with the lowest time being at the 20 minute mark for a 5K course, but even the walkers and bikers have fun because there are others at the same pace. It’s exciting to see our dealers continue to grow their emphasis on fitness throughout our dealer network, and each year at the fun run we get to see how they’ve improved.
Our dealers feel great physically because they challenge themselves to participate each year, and now they are benefitting others through their generosity towards the cancer society”. “It’s a winning combination!” In conjunction with the event, Cobalt held its annual dealer meeting conference at the Vinoy Resort and Golf Club in St. Petersburg, Florida. The conference brought together dealers from across the globe to experience what’s in store for the upcoming 2014 model year.
The packed agenda featured a spectacular introduction of the new 2014 models aboard “Yacht Starship”, Florida’s largest dining yacht. Discussion centered on the new R Series introductions which included the R3, R5 and R7. In addition, the 2014 model year will showcase the new 220S, featuring innovative seating design. Dealers were also enlightened by the dynamic keynote speech from Sam Dantzler, who shared key insights on sales strategies and critical issues facing today’s recreational retailers.

The First Person In Gets The Best Spot
We’ve discussed awards here before, the recognition that comes Cobalt’s way from time to time, and we report these awards with all appropriate humility. Whether from the marine industry for innovative design, or from J.D. Power and Associates for overall customer satisfaction, or from professional associations for the magnificent record of integrity and service compiled by our Cobalt dealers, these awards serve as a top-line reminder that we need to keep on keeping on. Fact is, each of the plaques and statuettes in our trophy case represents Cobalt’s refusal to move away from our founding principles. Fact is, we continue to operate on a business model not much different from, no less sophisticated than the Golden Rule itself.
One of our more recent recognitions comes from The Wichita Business Journal, the weekly chronicle of all things commercial and industrial in South Central Kansas, where Cobalt Boats was chosen one of the five winners of the newspaper’s Best in Business competition, which assessed the companies’ revenue growth, community involvement, product innovation, and marketing prowess. We quote a few statements from the article accompanying the announcement of Cobalt’s win.
“The corporate environment at Cobalt Boats in Neodesha can be felt even before you enter the building. Founder Pack St. Clair has strived to create a sense that no one job is more important than any other at the 45-year-old boat manufacturer. And it starts in the parking lot — where there is no assigned parking for any of the company’s 520 workers. ‘The first person in gets the best spot,” says CEO Paxson St. Clair. ‘That’s the attitude we have here. That culture that has been established here over the last 45 years has been the backbone of our success.’”
“Bill Wallisch, the company’s CFO, says, “If it’s not a quality product, it’s not going out.”
“I don’t think we could build Cobalt-quality products anywhere else (than Neodesha)” CEO Paxson St. Clair says. “This city has always been extremely supportive of us. It’s a great relationship.” That in turn helps Cobalt build great relationships with its customers, both existing and prospective.”
The best rules, like the best laws, are not particularly complicated. Thomas Jefferson said so. So do the people of Cobalt. Treat everyone alike: with kindness, respect, and a wide, wide-open sense of possibility.
All so very simple really.
And when the week’s work is done, when the last April boat has been built, the awards will take care of themselves.

Cobalt Dealers Dominate Boating Industry’s Top 100 Boat Dealers in North America
Legendary Marine of Destin, Florida was named Dealer of the Year for its rapid growth and thoughtful investments in marketing, education, and service. This accomplishment marks the first time that a Cobalt dealer has been recognized at the top Position in the Top 100.
In addition, Cobalt dealers were recognized throughout the night, partially due to the massive increases in market share and sales growth that Cobalt dealers have experienced. Action Water Sports won special recognition for its website, ranked best among all North American dealerships, as did Parks Marina of Okoboji, Iowa for the quality of its customer events. Gordy’s Lakefront Marine of Fontana, Wisconsin saw its all-important service department named the very best in North America.
Cobalt Boats congratulates these outstanding businesses for their allegiance to the highest standards of integrity, knowledge of product, and willingness to go above and beyond in the service of ever more sophisticated customers. Altogether, Cobalt dealerships accounted for a full twenty percent of the Top 100. Listed below are the Cobalt Dealerships recognized as Top 100 Dealers.

Setting the Industry Standard
Imitation, the old saying goes, is the purest form of flattery. For a boat manufacturer – no, for a bunch of boat manufacturers – to copy Cobalt ideas can be downright up-puffing. And so, you’ll please forgive the folks in Neodesha for a quick mention of the ways in which they’ve been imitated, the Cobalt innovations that have gone on to become industry standards.
All perfectly legal, you understand, this borrowing of what once were fundamental differentiations in the design and building of these boats. Legal after a sufficient period of exclusivity, and therefore and thereafter flattering. Over the years, would-be competitors have seen the wisdom of metal backing plates installed in the fiberglass below hardware on the deck, multiplying the strength, increasing the longevity of hard-working cleats and eyes and rails. Cobalt has added muscle and bone to the most vulnerable areas in a boat’s design – at the bow, for instance, where the now-legendary Cobalt scuff plate stands guard. And everywhere, deep down in the fiberglass behind every bolt, every screw on every hardware attachment, there rides plated reinforcement, ruggedness belied by the friendly reflections of a perfect gelcoat.
And next time you pass by a Cobalt windshield, pause for a moment to understand the stresses inevitably applied there. Feel the cold rigidity of the stainless steel designed everywhere in the windshield, its mounting, and its supports. Know that Cobalt has anticipated the worst, has designed the best possible resistance to wind, to the force of years of happy use of your boat. Next week, we’ll talk about the often, if unsuccessfully, copied Cobalt ride, an extended story in itself. Stay strong, you who go down to the sea.
