Volvo Penta Next-Generation Gasoline Engines Named one of the Top Products of the Year

Cobalt Boats and Volvo Penta have decades of experience working together to not only improve the boating experience, but to also design innovative products, bringing creativity and quality to the forefront of the industry. We are pleased to share their newest product – the 5.3L 300 and 350 hp V8 gasoline sterndrive engine.

Boating Industry has named Volvo Penta’s Next Generation Gasoline Engine one of the Top Products of the Year.  You can read more about the 2016 winners in their May Issue.

These next-generation engines introduce fresh features that have never been available to the sterndrive market from any engine supplier. They are the first V8 marine gas engines combining the following technical advancements:

  • Common-rail direct fuel injection for better fuel economy and lower emissions
  • Lightweight all-aluminum block for industry-leading weight-to-horsepower ratio
  • Standard Freshwater cooling (FWC) for longer engine life in the marine environment
  • Variable Valve Timing (VVT) producing higher torque and acceleration across the full range of RPMs
  • Wideband oxygen sensors to accommodate blended fuels and fuel quality

Again, Cobalt Boats would like to applaud Volvo Penta on their newest innovation, and for the many years of success and partnership. We are sure to see even more great things to come from this innovative company!

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to navigate the new R30

The latest addition to Cobalt's award-winning line of bowriders is the all-new R30 - a luxurious open-bow day boat designed with "Free Space Reclamation", Cobalt's exclusive technique for space maximization. Elegant and expansive seating options combine with its endless storage spaces to provide the legendary ride that Cobalt is famous for.

The largest of the BR Series, the R30 also features a motorized swim step that lowers to just below the water's surface. Also astern, find a beach of a sunpad - large enough for four sun worshipers. And when it comes time to gather around for some good fun and conversation, make use of the convertible layout in the cockpit. Lounge the seats forward or aft, gather around the teak-adorned cockpit table, or convert the area into a couch oasis with filler cushions.

The port side features a head compartment that doubles as a changing room. At the helm, captain will find the technology of our glass cockpit design intuitive and amazing - equipped with three Garmin touch screens that keep your route in view at all times. In addition, the available joystick control with its easy maneuverability and simple operation make docking a breeze.

That's right, space AND technology without having to study rocket science. The R30 is luxuriously simple, not complicated like other imitators. The R30 embraces elegance and appeal – two prized possessions that only a Cobalt can offer.

New Owners of San Ramon Boat Center Take the Helm

San Ramon Boat Center (SRBC), a long time Cobalt dealership with stores in Rocklin, California and Lake Tahoe, recently announced the sale of the business to Scott Vanderbeek. Scott is a veteran automotive dealership owner with more than 30 years of experience in retail business.

San Ramon Boat Center has been a Cobalt dealer since 1971, when owner Frank Warn and Cobalt Founder Pack St. Clair met at the San Francisco Boat Show. Together, these two marine industry legends established Cobalt Boats as the recreational day-boat leader in Northern California and on Lake Tahoe. Throughout the long term relationship, SRBC has been the world’s largest Cobalt dealership 21 times. “Frank and the Warn family have been friends since our first meeting in 1971,” said Pack St. Clair in a statement. “It has been a successful and rewarding 45-year friendship, and we look forward to building on the rock-solid foundation for the next generation.”

Scott and his son, Jared will immediately be taking over the dealership.  Scott and Jared Vanderbeek have a great resume in the automotive industry with a focus on marketing and customer care. Scott was the President of Woodland Motors for the last 13 years. He previously owned Vanderbeek Motors for 19 years which he sold to AutoNation. The Vanderbeeks, who have been boaters on Lake Tahoe for almost 40 years, are eager to build on the successes and put their mark on the iconic dealership.  Cobalt is happy to welcome Scott and Jared to the Cobalt family.

Best Boating Apps for 2016

The time is near – boating season in all its glory will soon be the topic of your weekends, vacations and reunions. If you’re new to the boating world, or just looking to freshen up your boating knowledge, here are the 10 best boating apps, rated by Discover Boating.

If you are looking to add some new boating apps to your tablet or smartphone, look no further. We’ve compiled a list of the 10 best boating apps to help you navigate, plan, share and socialize on the water this year:

1. Navionics Boating – GPS

Time and time again, when we speak to boaters and ask them what GPS app they’re using, Navionics Boating is the answer. Navionics is free to download and offers in-app purchases for charts and other upgrades, such as autorouting. Navionics Boating is available for both iOS and Android devices.

2. NOAA SuperRes Radar HD (iOS) or RadarScope (Android)

In order to enjoy the day safely on the water, a close eye must be kept on the weather. If you’re on iOS, in our experience the best radar app is NOAA’s SuperRes Radar. It has very hi-resolution and incredible accuracy. If you are on an Android device, RadarScope is just as good and accesses the same data. These apps are not only good for boating, but just great to have any time you want to see what kind of weather is rolling in.

    3. Windfinder

Ideal for sailors, kitesurfers, windsurfers and more, this app allows you to see the wind, waves and weather across the globe in real time. Windfinder is available for free (iOS andAndroid), or you can purchase the ad-free pro version (iOS and Android).

    4. USA Tides

If you boat and/or fish in saltwater, having the latest marine tide information at your fingertips is invaluable. USA Tides is available for both iOS and Android and displays tide information for all stations in the US.

    5. Animated Knots

Animated Knots by Grog is a broad teaching and reference tool for boaters and other hobbyists. With step-by-step instructions and, you guessed it, frame-by-frame animations, this app teaches you to tie knots at your own pace. For five dollars, you really can’t go wrong. You can download this app for iOS or Android.

      6. FishingScout

A great resource and social app for anglers. The app allows you to upload photos of your latest catch, describe the conditions of how you caught it, study other locations where fish were caught, add friends, view their photos and more. Available for free on both iOS andAndroid.

      7. Dockwa

The Dockwa app allows boaters to view marinas in their location, select a destination and request a slip or mooring, all from their mobile device. Once the marina approves the reservation, payment is processed seamlessly through the app. Dockwa hopes to be theOpentable of boating. Check out Dockwa on iOS or Android.

        8. Swell Advantage

Swell Advantage is a social boating app that lets you see where your family and friends are out on the water, including where they are headed and their speed. Custom notifications inform you when family and friends get on the water. It’s free for iOS andAndroid (beta).

        9. Boatrax

Boatrax lets you keep detailed records of your boat while capturing and sharing your moments with family and friends. You can share your location and photos with friends and the boating community. You can pick up Boatrax for both iOS and Android.

          10. Camera app

Last but certainly not least, make sure you use your camera app to document all your boating adventures this year and share it with us on Facebook and Instagram!
